What is it?
There are over 2,500 nationwide benefit prgrams, and you may be eligible to apply for some of them. The National Council on Aging has created an amazing online search engine, Benefitscheckup.org, to find some of those programs in your area.

Here at SAIL, we utilize the Benefitscheckup.org search engine as well as other sources to bring you the most up-to-date resources. We also not only give you the information about the programs, we also help you apply, free of charge.

SSI/SSDI
Application Assistance
The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. In addition to several provisions for general welfare, the new Act created a social insurance program designed to pay retired workers age 65 or older a continuing income after retirement. (https://www.ssa.gov/history/briefhistory3.html) Over the years, the Social Security Act has expanded to include 21 programs, including, old age, unemployment, public health, support for the blind and state children's health insurance program, CHIP.

Here at SAIL, we understand that an illness or injury can cause significant financial hardship. At no cost to you we will work with you to present your case to the Social Security Board. Important!!
It is important to know the difference between SSI and SSDI. SSI, Supplemental Security Insurance is distributed to to diabled adults and children who have limited income and resources. SSDI, Social Security Disability Insurance, pays benefits to you and certain family members, in the event of a disabillty, if you have earned enough Social Security credits.
Medicare Part A &Part B
Medicare Parts A and B are often an essential part of your health plan when you retire. Part A handles your in-patient care, skilled nursing facility (not be be confused with long-term care), hospice and some home health care. Part B covers certain doctor's services, outpatient care, medical supplies and preventative services.

In most cases when you have begun your Initial Enrollment Period, IEP, Social Security will send you a letter letting you know the status of your benefits. If you have worked 10 years and earned 40 quarters, you most likely won't have a monthly premium for Part A. There will be an income based premium for Part B. *If you do not enroll in Parts A or B (and D for that matter) when you are first eligible without already having creditable coverage, you may (most likely) will be penalized.

State Benefits:
Medicaid, SNAP, TANF
When it comes to Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps) and TANF (cash benefits) each state is in charge for setting up the qualifications, application process and client maintanence systems. These benefits are income based, meaning if you have enough the government won't give you more.
