Safety Tips

It's better to be safe than dead. That might not be the most politically correct way to say it. But let's be honest, you might be resisting the idea that you need to take extra precautions for YOUR safety. It's part of our mission to advocate for you. Not just with others, but also with yourself. Just remember aging begins the moment we're born. It's natural. It's more than ok to have to take your time, prepare and most of all ASK FOR HELP before you actually need it.

1.

Prevent Falls

Falls is still one of the top injuries for older Americans. Make clear paths and install or use railings wherever you need them. Use DME products to assist if neccessary. Talk to your Doctor about any dizziness, headaches or imbalances you may experience.

2.

Proof your Home.

Make sure you have smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and a fire extinguisher. If you have never used one watch this video so that you're familiar with the process. Any furniture that might tip over, secure it to the wall. Use tools that help you reach up high and move as many things as possible to areas that are easy to get to.

3.

No Slip & Sliding in the Bathroom

Some of the things you can do in the bathroom includes using bath rails for getting in and out of the tub, if you're using floor mats make sure to secure them to the floor with the proper adhesive, consider using a night light or motion sensor light at night.

4.

Avoid Poisoning

You can avoid poisoning by keeping the labels on things and reading them each time you use them. If you decide to use a pill organizer follow your prescription directions fully to avoid over doses and mixed medication reactions. Switch to natural and or environmentally friendly cleansers which usually have a lower rate of poisoning than chemically based products.

5.

Protect against Abuse

Elder Abuse is a real thing and is an illegal and punishable crime. No one has the right to your person or your possessions without your permission. That's your children, grand children friends, religious community or charity. Discuss the option of appointing power of attorney over your health and finances with someone your trust.

If you or someone you know is dealing with elder abuse call 911 if there is an immediate threat or concern. For all other questions and reports call the U.S. Department of health and human services at (800) 677-1116 and they will direct you to your local agency.

6.

Keep Emergency Numbers Handy

Whether you use a phone book, or have a list of numbers on a piece of paper on the fridge. Make sure to get all your phone number together in one place. Not on your phone. if you can't charge your phone and it dies, you won't have anyone's number.

7.

Ask for HELP!

Last but not least, make sure you ask for help, family, friends, neighbors or even your homemaker are all available to assist you. No person is an island, we all need help. Make sure you get the help you need.
